Smarter design for oil bottles: fewer parts, more efficiency
Kornelis Caps & Closures produces a wide range of caps and closures, from standard models to fully customized solutions. In a recent project, the company developed a new closure for oil and vinegar bottles with fewer components and reduced weight.
Closure for oil and vinegar bottles
A customer from a niche market was proactively approached by Kornelis when it became clear that the existing mold was nearing the end of its lifespan. Production volumes had declined in recent years, making an investment in a similar new mold seem unprofitable.

During a brainstorming session, attention turned to the bottom of the closure, where a sleeve was located. The question arose: what if the sleeve were made longer? This would allow the tamper evidence to be retained, just like in the old design. The team developed a closure with separate legs that, together with the longer sleeve, keep the closure firmly on the bottle. “The closure now fits over the entire lower neck finish, which means the old seal is no longer needed,” explains Peter Gols, Senior R&D at Kornelis.
Recyclable closure
This brings multiple benefits. Consumers no longer have to dispose of an additional seal. Both parts remain neatly on the bottle, making the whole product more sustainable. Peter adds: “We also deliberately chose a mono-material design so the product can be more easily recycled within the same waste stream.”
The result is a more efficient design with fewer parts and reduced weight. By opting for a mono-material solution, the closure also aligns well with PPWR requirements. The new closure meets all set standards, and because part of the mold could be reused, large investments were not necessary. The injection molding process has also become simpler for Kornelis.
This project is a strong example of how Kornelis and its customer jointly developed a smart, sustainable solution.
